Benton County Unemployment Rises For Month of October

Benton County had a 0.5 percent increase in unemployment for the month of October. Unemployment went up to 4.7 percent from 4.2 percent in September. Benton County now has 310 unemployed residents as opposed to 4,180 people working in the county. Carroll County also saw a 0.4 percent increase in unemployment to 4.7 percent for the month of October, while Henry County had a 0.5 percent increase to 4.0 percent. There were also unemployment increases in Humphreys and Decatur Counties, as Humphreys had a 0.3 percent increase to 3.6, while Decatur jumped 0.5 percent to 4.2. Benton County ranks as the fifth highest unemployed county in the state of Tennessee.

Benton County Unemployment Decreases by Nearly One Percent

As Governor Haslam announced that all 95 counties in Tennessee now have less than 5 percent unemployment, Benton County also reaped statewide benefits of a larger workforce. Benton County’s unemployment rate dropped by nearly one percent for the month of September to 4.2 percent. Unemployment in Benton County decreased by 0.9 percent from 5.1 percent in August to 4.2. 6,400 Benton Countians are employed compared to only 280 in the county that are unemployed. Carroll County also saw a massive drop in unemployment from 4.9 in August, down 0.8 percent to 4.1 in September. Henry County saw a modest drop in unemployment in a 0.6 percent decrease from 4.2 to 3.6 in the latest totals. Humphreys County had 3.3 percent unemployment, down 0.7 percent in August, while Decatur County had 3.8 percent unemployment from 4.6 percent in August. Tennessee has the lowest unemployment rate in the Southeast with 3 percent. September marks the fourth time all year unemployment rates in Tennessee have dropped in all 95 counties.

Donate a Deer in Benton County to Feed Area Hungry

This hunting season in Benton County, Tennessee Wildlife Federation is proud to continue the tradition of providing venison to families in need through our program Hunters for the Hungry. There are processors in Benton County ready to accept donations of deer from generous hunters. Now in its 20th year, Hunters for the Hungry has provided nearly 6 million meals to Tennesseans in need. Hunters for the Hungry connects generous hunters in Benton County and across the state with Tennesseans in need Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Hunters for the Hungry program is open for the season. Participating deer processors throughout the state are now accepting donations of whole deer to feed local families in need.

Camden Volleyball Finishes Season Wednesday at State Tournament

After the best season in program history, Camden Volleyball’s run at the State Tournament in Murfreesboro ended Wednesday. Camden defeated Sullivan South 3-1 Wednesday morning to advance in the losers bracket to play Signal Mountain that afternoon. The Lions bounced back from being down 2-0 to take a set, but Signal Mountain’s level of play was too much as they took the final set for a 3-1 victory. After the Sullivan South game, Sara Kilgore talked with two seniors on the Camden Volleyball team, Sydnee Baker and Britnee Minor.

Sonny Melton-A National Hero

The heroic and tragic story of Sonny Melton is now known to people all across the United States. After Sonny Melton died Sunday evening while shielding his wife Dr. Heather Gulish Melton from gunfire during the Las Vegas Massacre Shootings at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, nationwide attention has been brought to the Melton story. Dr. Heather Gulish Melton appeared on CNN Tuesday night to talk with Anderson Cooper about the sad yet heroic events that took place in Las Vegas. Dr. Melton described Sonny as the most selfless kind-hearted person she had ever met, as she gave details of his life and their relationship on national television. There are thousands upon thousands of messages and posts of hope, sympathy, and love on Sonny Melton’s Facebook page, where strangers from as far away as Turkey paid their respects. Ridgeway Funeral Home in Paris will be in charge of funeral arrangements for Sonny Melton. No time has been announced, but we’ll keep you updated on the latest details.
