CAMDEN AND BIG SANDY CITY ELECTIONS HELD

Two hundred sixty six voters turned out Tuesday and during early voting to select city council members in Camden and Big Sandy. 252 votes were cast in Camden and 14 in Big Sandy. In Big Sandy, two aldermen seats were up for election. Both candidates were unopposed. They were John Clement and Robin Pierpoint. In Camden there were 5 candidates running for 3 seats on the city council. Debbie Baldwin was the top vote getter with 164 followed by Randall Clark with 136, Richard Smith 129, Sam Hayes 121 and Debbie Kyle 91. Baldwin, Clark and Smith were elected. There were 387 early votes and 230 on election day in Camden and 26 on election day in Big Sandy.

LION PITCHER WILLIAMS TO SIGN WITH SOUTHWEST

Janathan Williams is one of those reasons Flash and I love to broadcast Lion athletics. It’s rewarding to watch a player develop through their time in high school. It’s even more fun to watch a blue collar guy get his reward when high school is over. Janathan Williams is just that…a blue collar worker on the mound.

You can see his pure passion for the game every time he gets the ball. He carries with him to the next level not only his nifty ERA and win/loss record but a couple of nicknames that define his baseball character…i.e..THE JANITOR(for his ability to come in and clean up another’s mess) or some call him THE MULE(not sure of the origin but it sounds cool for a pitcher). A solid student in the classroom, Williams has a bright future ahead of him not only on the diamond but in life.

Janathan is the son of Jeff and Jennifer Williams. You should both be proud of the job you have done raising this special student athlete. A fierce competitor and always the gentleman on and off the field, we congratulate Janathan Williams on accepting a full ride scholarship to play baseball for and attend SouthWest Community College this fall. Williams will make it official when he signs @ 11am this Tuesday @ Camden Central High School.

BIKE RIDER KILLED IN HUMPHREYS COUNTY

A bicycle rider was found dead on Thursday morning in Humphreys County, and local authorities are asking the public for help in the case.

The rider was found dead around 7:15 am along Highway 70, according to Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis.

The sheriff said it appears to be a hit and run. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

Davis said it is a “horrific accident,” and his department and the THP need anyone who might have seen something to call them at 931-296-7792.

This is the second fatal pedestrian/biking accident Humphreys County has had in the last six months.

MURDER SUSPECT ARRAIGNED IN HENRY COUNTY COURT

The suspect in the murder of a 52 year old Paris man over the weekend appeared in Henry County General Sessions Court Tuesday for his arraignment.

John Eric Childress, 31, of 314 High Lander Road Camden, was appointed a public defender and his next appearance was set for July 9. Childress is charged with first degree murder in the death of his father Timothy Childress at his home on Hwy. 641 South.

Childress is being held on 1 million bond.

In a related arrest, a henry County man was arrested for being an accessory after the fact after he allegedly attempted to warn Childress of hius impending arrest by Sheriff’s deputies.

Robert Earl Watts, 55, of 115 Rushing Road off Highway 641 southeast of Paris was charged with accessory after the fact after being arrested at his home. Watts was released on his own recognizance and was to appear in court on Tuesday.

MARK FLORENCE NAMED NEW DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS

Benton County Director of Schools Randall Robertson handed over the reins to his successor at last Monday night’s board of education meeting. Board members approved a three-year contract with mark Florence, who will officially take over as director of schools on July 1.

Florence graduated from Camden High School in 1984. He then attended the University of Tennessee at Martin where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He later attended Tennessee State where he earned his masters in administration and supervision and became an education specialist.

In 1993 Florence started teaching criminal justice at the Benton County Career and Technical Center. In 1999 he was promoted to principal and director of that same center.

“I have some big shoes to fill,” Florence said. “But I have confidence in our staff and teachers. If it were not for them this job would be a lot harder.”

“My main objective as director of schools is to make sure that teachers, support staff , and students have the resources and support they need to meet all of their needs.”: Florence said, “We are blessed with great teachers. The community should be proud of our school system.”

Florence and his wife Milette reside in Camden with their two daughters Sara who will be a sophomore at Camden Central High School, and Ashley who will be attending Briarwood in the fall.

“I look forward to being director of schools. I grew up here and I love this community. I will make sure this school system continues to grow and improve,” said Florence.

MOTORCYCLE PICK-UP ACCDENT IN BIG SANDY

A 2-VEHICLE ACCIDENT LATE TUESDAY AFTER ON HWY. 69-A IN BIG SANDY RESULTED IN THE DRIVER OF THE MOTORCYCLE BEING TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH MULTIPLE INJURIES. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED ABOUT 5:45 WITH THE MOTORCYCLE TRAVELING SOUTH ON 69-A WHEN ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, A RED PICK-UP TRUCK ENTERED THE HIGHWAY IN FRONT OF THE MOTORCYCLE. A FEMALE PASSENGER OF THE MOTORCYCLE APPARENTLY WAS NOT INJURED. BENTON COUNTY AMBULANCE EMERGENCY PERSONNEL ARRIVED WITHIN MINUTES OF THE ACCIDENT. THE NAMES OF THOSE INVOLVED WERE NOT AVAILABLE. TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL WORKED THE ACCIDENT.

BENTON COUNTY MAN HELD IN FATHER’S SHOOTING DEATH IN HENRY COUNTY

A Benton County man has been charged with first degree murder in the Saturday shooting death of his father in Henry County.

The body of Timothy Childress, 52, of 11770 Highway 641 southeast of Paris was discovered at his home Saturday afternoon, according to Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew.

His son, John Eric Childress, 31, of Camden has been charged with first degree murder in the shooting.

Belew said Sheriff’s Cpl Clyde Sulcer initially responded to the home shortly after 4pm Saturday, after the Sheriff’s Department received a call from a neighbor. Sulcer found the elder Childress dead from a single gunshot wound.

“A neighbor came over and discovered the body,” Belew said. “he had been deceased for a short time.”

Timothy Childress was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by Henry County Coronor Danny Tucker. His body was taken to Nashville for an autopsy by the Paris Henry County Rescue Squad.

During to the ensuing investigation, the Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the TBI, Highway Patrol and Attorney General’s Office.

A statewide alert for Childress, who was considered armed and dangerous, was issued on Saturday. He was arrested early Saturday near the Benton County border.

Bond for John Childress was set at $1 million. He is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Henry County General Session Court.
